Fashion Art Toronto | I got a media pass

Last month, I was excited to attend the Toronto Art Fashion "FAT" event. I paid $150.00 for a media pass which was worth the experience and opportunity it was worth it. It was the perfect occasion to add a new dimension to my photography portfolio by capturing the essence of a fashion runway show. As someone who had never experienced shooting in this dynamic and fast-paced environment, I was thrilled and slightly nervous about the prospect.

The event itself was an incredible experience that surpassed all my expectations. I entered the venue and was immediately engulfed in a world of creativity, glamour, and style. Everywhere I looked, I encountered an array of breathtaking outfits, meticulously crafted designs, and impeccably dressed individuals who exuded confidence and passion for the fashion industry. It was a true feast for the senses.

Eager to make the most of this opportunity, I embarked on a journey of learning and preparation. Understanding the intricacies of capturing the energy and movement of a fashion runway show became my top priority. So, turning to YouTube University, I delved into the wealth of knowledge on the platform, where I found invaluable insights and tips from experienced fashion runway photographers. Below I listed the five top things that affected me the most and are most useful for a newbie fashion runway photographer.

1. Position yourself strategically: Find a spot along the runway with a clear view of the models. Consider the angles and perspectives you want to capture. Being closer to the end of the runway can provide opportunities for unique shots as models turn or pose before exiting. Bouns, show up early to get the best spot, or if you plan to be in the Media pit, get there two hrs early so I can set up.

2. Optimize your camera settings: Set your camera to a fast shutter speed to freeze the models' movements and avoid blur. Use a wide aperture to create a shallow depth of field, separating the models from the background. Adjust your ISO to ensure proper exposure while minimizing noise. My settings were

3. Be mindful of the lighting: Pay attention to the lighting conditions at the fashion show venue. Consider using a flash or an external lighting setup to ensure proper exposure if the lighting is challenging. However, be mindful of any restrictions or guidelines regarding flash photography and respect the event's atmosphere. Bouns, I asked the lighting guys for a test and also asked what their Kelvin was so I could set mine accordingly.

4. Vary your shots: Experiment with different types of images to capture the essence of the runway. Shoot wide-angle shots to showcase the entire scene and provide context. Switch to a telephoto lens to capture close-ups of details, like clothing textures or accessories. Capture both full-length and half-length shots to showcase the outfits.

5. Build relationships with designers and models: Networking is essential in the fashion industry. Attend fashion events, reach out to designers and models, and collaborate with them on creative projects. Building relationships can open doors to more opportunities and help you gain access to exclusive events.

It all started when I was 6, watching my father work his old Pentax camera while trying to keep me still so he could take a picture. At that moment, I realized I wanted to take photos of moments in people's lives. But I don't just want to capture a moment; I want my images to tell a story....your story.
